The hardware ecosystem is a mess. I use MQTT as a key protocol to connect everything. That and a zigbee network bridged to mqtt.
I've had comparability issues with ZigBee devices but mqtt as been solid with WiFi devices

@dafunk@aus.social It's true. I'm just setting up my first MQTT device (a wired garage door opener relay) so I'm getting that set up now. It's an adventure!
