The death of the Carthaginian leader, Hamilcar Barca, illustrated by Radu Oltean....
Hamilcar Barca died in 228 BC in Iberia (modern-day Spain) while battling the local Celtiberian tribes. While specific accounts differ, he likely died by drowning in the Jucar River while retreating during a battle against the Oratani tribe, or was killed in battle while leading a rear-guard action to protect his sons, Hannibal and Hasdrubal.
