Small Scrimshaw Sundial (19th Century) after instruments by London mathematical instrument maker Thomas Tuttell, reflects period’s fascination with earlier English scientific devices.
Tuttell listed his shop at King’s Arms at Charing Cross in 1702. Shell dial is engraved with battle scene and motto of Order of the Garter, “Honi soit qui mal y pense,” while reverse shows a royal crest flanked by rose of England and thistle of Scotland above monarchic motto “Dieu et mon droit.
