There's the pitched battle hesitancy issue here. People want to engage in battle and are fairly confident we could win, but nobody wants to be in the first wave. The first rank of the first column, because they'll take the heaviest casualties.

Yes this exactly and that was my hope for Casey, that one of Our Guys who is more astute would see him taking the first arrows and think "why not me?". The beatdown the treacherous incumbent GOP rats took in Indiana probably would help too.
