A lot more people think cat ears are cute than just furries. I’m indifferent, but this triggered a memory for me that I haven’t recovered from. I met a nonbinary person a while ago, but they didn’t mention their pronouns when introducing themselves until after I mistakenly misgendered them an hour or so into getting to know them. And while gently correcting me, they just pointed to their cat ears. And I’m sorry, I have to get into what they were wearing too. It was a sweater vest over a button shirt with tan pants and a belt, they had short hair and a beard, and a very deep voice, and they also were wearing black cat ears.
I will always and did quickly adjust my mental picture of them and which pronouns to use, but the idea to me that cat ears were ontologically non-masculine, that they are the sole thing they believe reflects their gender nonconformity, and kinda intimating like I was supposed to know that already, it was just unsettling.
