And I figured it out! It was the flash drive I was using.
According to Reddit, apparently some older USB devices won't work well in newer devices when it comes to using them as a boot device. Apparently, this was the case here, but now I'm curious as to why that's the case ๐ค
Anyways, back to our original goal: trying FreeBSD on my laptop! I'll use another flash drive to install the little testing system (hopefully we can get at least a minimal KDE install up with just 16 GB of storage ๐). I'm not expecting a whole lot of things to work, but we'll see how it goes! ๐

@gperson@social.linux.pizza I'm consistently surprised by how quickly usb thumb drives and sdcards fail...I always check against known good removable media now, just because I've experienced similar frustrations...
