I'm given to understand there's a similar trick in illustration - turn your reference upside down, and you'll draw it how it really looks, not just how you thought it did. I'm don't have personal familiarity with that one, so I might be misrepresenting it.

@Fruan@kind.social I went to art school and yes, this is a trick that works. For digital drawings you can also mirror the image and suddenly everything that's off will jump out at you.
