They at least started debate on the issues locally... but this was in the 1990s well before the Internet or social media/smartphones were a thing here in the UK for the general public. Campaign groups continue to exist and operate similarly today; I worry that their impact is limited/filtered more today as you suggested. I just wanted to throw in the suggestion of using other channels, not controlled by mega corps... Good luck!
