Just as my ancient Mediterranean ancestors will have known the smell of a storm before a single cloud was visible, I know the smell of a washing machine drainage motor overheating because it has hair tangled around the drive shaft bit.

When I peered into the drain filter section and saw that clump of hair by the light of my phone torch I made a satisfied sound that I feel echoed backward through time to match a sound made by an ancestor hearing the first drops of rain on the roof.
