Actual most of antenny types are not easy to replicate right (like matching the correct frequency and impedance) without some measuring equipment.
If you want to build more than groundplane, sleeve dipols or double quad antennas you need to get a VNA. The cheap ones will do.
HAM related websites are inspiring, but in the end only measuring can tell if it was a succesfull build.
So i think best to start is get a vna device and get in touch.
Antenna position, surrounding metal structures and a good place to mount one are just as impirtant than the antenna itself, sometimes 10cm pisition change do a lot.
There are no "whonder" antennas, and above 8..10dB the constructions get big.
And everything smaller than 1/4 weavelenght is cursed heat generation devices with some of the RF can escape.
I myself started with a book, old version of "rothammel" in german.
