This is perhaps nitpicking, but I think people largely defended it partly because it was the basis of their careers and in the unacceptable way that they did because the person who called it into question is Black.
(This is vaguely adjacent to my area.)

@celesteh@post.lurk.org that's fair. I think class also needs bringing into the picture, especially when academia is involved
