I want to whine about hard drive prices but I don't want to be somebody who whines about hard drive prices.
But still: The most affordable drives nowadays seem to be used SAS drives between 6 and 10 TB. But I don't want a NAS that uses twice the power, produces twice the heat and is probably about twice as loud as one with SATA drives.
Or do I, maybe? I could use them for backups where they don't run as much and repurpose my current backup drives for the NAS that I want to build. Or I could just use SAS drives from now on and be one of the cool data hoarders. Not literally though.
I'm disappointed because I thought hard drive prices would always go down over the years and eventually I could afford those new 16, 18, 20 TB drives. But apparently they're still getting more expensive this year and the sweet spot in terms of price/capacity ratio seems to be bought away before or immediately when they hit eBay and the likes.
