The original symbol was designed by Deb Ellsworth in 1973, when she was a college student active in the anti-Vietnam War movement, and has become a popular icon representing empathy in activism and education for 50+ years. She's still documenting its use to this day: https://empathysymbol.com

I actually spoke with Deb about making these way back in 2021, and in the spirit of her generosity in offering the symbol up to be used freely by all, we're donating 100% of proceeds from the pin sales to The Trevor Project. In fact, we've raised almost $700 as I post this!
