@neurovagrant good to know! After I wrote the above, I remembered that I went to college with a guy, Keith McMillan, who wrote a TeX "virus," which attacked Emacs back in 1994, so I'm guessing modern versions, having a MUCH larger attack surface, could be part of the picture.
