I'm not saying that we shouldn't build for accessibility. I'm not saying that we shouldn't be concerned about outreach. But I think our focus should be on providing tools for welcome, and that we should regard growth as a potential side-effect of welcome, but one that we can live without, so long as the network consists of people who benefit from that welcome.

    It's easy to confuse those goals. They often overlap, which makes its easy to start out building a tool meant to welcome, and wind up implementing a feature geared toward driving growth. Welcome is a fuzzy notion compared to growth, which can be measured and graphed. And while they sometimes overlap, they're sometimes at odds with one another as well, so that features that serve growth wind up making a network less welcoming. More people log on, but no one is genuinely welcome.
