@MonaApp@mastodon.social The description of the setting suggests that it’ll still guess the language. Does this disable the automatic detection (which is what I’m asking about—but based on testing, that doesn’t seem to be the case)? If so, the language could be clearer. I’m feeling a loss of control with everything trying to be automatic and I find it very distressing that I’m no longer able to simply choose how my language is selected (automatic or manual). I think it mostly stems from not knowing how the detection functions. Is it on device? Am I hitting another server for language detection? I can’t even tell if the detection was wrong. What I’ve loved so much about the app is how configurable it is and I would like to be able to opt out of automatic language selection.

@helianthropy@tech.lgbt The language detection happens on-device using Apple’s software, and Mona only accepts a detection result when Apple says they’re super confident about it. The idea of automation is that you can just forget about trivial things like this and focus on what really matters, like writing a nice post. Apple’s software may occasionally get it wrong, but so do many Mastodon users who label languages manually—or don’t label them at all. Either way, it’s not that big of a deal.
