The thing is, LLMs DON'T ACTUALLY WORK for knowledge or computation they provide outputs that *resemble* someone thinking about it But don't actually bring reasoning to bear any problems that require actual mental models of the world or a specific area of expertise fall apart at the first or second step

@trochee@dair-community.social You start the post with insulting the intelligence of they who hold a viewpoint that differs to yours, the you proceed to shoot from the hip bullets of YOUR position. And of course you are convinced what the REAL problem is 🙄 What's the point of your post beyond soapboxing?

@trochee@dair-community.social people i know are like "i used chatGPT to help me write a letter and it was great" -- ARGH it doesn’t matter if your letter was great when you just contributed to this nightmare ecological disaster we're in. just please don't, people.

@trochee@dair-community.social Is it's mere use a climate disaster? No. It's not good, but other things, like driving a car, using Airplaines, having gas heating, etc. Are way worse. And compared to using bitcoin, using LLMs is like nothing. Is it founded on theft? No. Theft means that you steal something, that it's not there afterwards. It's not even copyright infringement, as they don't publish/distribute copyrighted material. There are ethical ways of using AI, like following the green Nextcloud Ethical AI Rating.

@helge@mastodon.social @trochee@dair-community.social if it's stealing, which person was stolen from and which object did they possess before, which is now in the hands of the thief?

@jleader@mastodon.social @Daniel_Blake@mastodon.top @helge@mastodon.social @trochee@dair-community.social it's not stealing. I can imagine, that it is maybe possible to get some text blocks out. Like when you ask a friend what the article was about and they repeat it. Whether it's to an extend, that it's copyright infringement, judges have to decide. There is a scale of plagiarism between copying word by word and speaking the same language. Not all plagiarism is illegal. But I can imagine, that AI companies might have violated some copyright laws at some point.

@trochee@dair-community.social what bothers me about a lot of the remaining "well the genie is out of the bottle and everyone else is gonna use it" arguments is that *we have tools for dealing with that*. It's called "a government", and it has successfully stopped many things that people *want* to do but are worse for everyone. We just have to get it to move.
