When I bought my little farm 25 years ago, there was a light, but widespread infestation of musk thistle. Digging them out before they could flower eliminated the problem, but it took a few years (each year easier than the previous one). I usually waited till they put up a flower stalk to dig (easier to find them). Any flower heads that showed purple went into a sack to be disposed of.
