@mhoye@mastodon.social i wish this wasn't owned by meta, cause in terms of accessibility this thing is impressive

@mhoye@mastodon.social I'm a bit torn about this because we've already seen perverts and shitface tiktok "pranksters" using this for disgusting personal gain, BUT they're an excellent and discreet/safer idea for accessibility and recording evidence of abuse, malpractice, discrimination, corruption, etc. Obviously there are multiple tutorials on hiding the blinking light (**and the fact it's made/owned by fucking facebook!**) so you should always assume they're recording. Hopefully this doesn't make glasses wearers a target of harassment, I can't imagine someone threatening to bomb a fucking Specsavers 😭

@mhoye@mastodon.social What about a version where it's "no wearable cameras that use proprietary protocols or remote servers" Or "No wearable cameras except open source with strictly local feed processing and storage"? The reason I say this is because the tech itself is possible to do right and to use for good purposes on a personal level. It's just that you have to not fall into the traps known as The Cloud, LLMs and Proprietary Code.

@mhoye@mastodon.social I feel like I'd amend this to no non-assistive wearable cameras

@mhoye@mastodon.social As we say: "Fuck off #Google #glassholes!", even if they are made by #Meta. #glashole #Rayban #privacy

@mhoye@mastodon.social Maybe add a little asterisk with an exemption for accessibility needs?

@mhoye@mastodon.social if this were a year ago id agree, but at this point in the US hidden cameras may become the only way to film police and ICE activities without consequences as the administration is trying it's best to make filming illegal

@mhoye@mastodon.social Oh, this is gonna get to be a real pickle the first time someone tries to get someone wearing prescription lenses in a camera-equipped frame, isn't it? Say what you will for Google's original attempt, at least that could be removed without telling someone to take off their prosthetics.

@mhoye@mastodon.social The big dilemma here is "Does this apply to cops?"

@mhoye@mastodon.social those meta glasses low-key freak me out. I had a look at them in a tech store and they were just glasses that had cameras on them. A bit creepy knowing the company behind it.
