Years after he retired from full-time teaching in 1998, he was teaching almost every week in the department of T&GC in Reading. This is when I met him and how many others remember him. Every Monday, a room packed with exciting new examples from his collection (books, posters, music sheets, catalogues, …). Every week, new smells and new infuriating questions. He was a master of small-group teaching, leading with questions, letting us stew, making us look for clues in what was in front of us.

    I can still feel my eyes hurting from staring while I was trying to figure out an answer, frustratingly obscure, but usually so apparent and obvious in retrospect. Artefacts can speak (if you stare :).
