I’m semi-frequently exposed to a Variety of political opinions, and I noticed an interesting effect: it’s really hard to verbally disagree with someone whose opinion is a complete polar opposite of yours. voicing your disagreement requires framing it in terms of a common moral compass: “we agree that A is bad, and B leads to A, so B is also bad”. but disagreeing with someone who doesn’t share any of your values requires dropping down to the level of ethics theory, which is basically impossible to do in casual conversation. therefore, people with similar opinions argue more than people with opposite opinions.
