@_r@donotsta.re @mutkitta@mastodontti.fi no, it actually works in the exact opposite way
you've ever used a japanese touchscreen keyboard? the one where the central key would have あ (a) and you'd need to swipe to get い (i), う (u), え (e) and お (o)? then the next key is か (ka) and the same swipes change the vowel there?
so, Flickboard (as well as Thumb-Key and the original MessagEase keyboard that started it all) works kinda like that, there are 9 huge keys featuring the most common letters in the target language, and swiping in different directions gets you extra ones
the idea is: big keys = less chance for errors, and if you train to use it for a bit, you can be as fast as with a traditional on-screen keyboard, even without autocorrect (which also means these keyboard don't collect data on what you type)

@rnd@toot.cat @mutkitta@mastodontti.fi hmm. I might check it out. unfortunately there's no good multilingual gliding keyboards left, so once I can't use this old version of yandex keyboard (yes really) anymore, I'll need something else to move to. And I'm sure as hell not going back to vanilla typing. that shit sucks ass
