Look, if we can suspend disbelief enough to accept a "universal translator" that perfectly interprets between 20th-21st century American English and some never-heard-before "alien" language, we can assume that interpretation includes temporal/historical/evolutionary linguistic changes. (As evidenced in every single episode hitting the "Time Travel" BINGO square.)
