@raganwald I've kinda always viewed the strategic purpose of HN is to serve as a kind "shiny object" lure by YC (VC) to draw in young impressionable software engineers, to help seed or staff startups that they can invest in -- buy cheap lottery tickets in. Thats the ends, rest is just a means.
