The animation looks much better in the p5 editor; here's the code https://gist.github.com/bazzargh/1880c560707f8de8dd6328a0b3acfbb1 ... which is horrible, you can see where I added alllll those points to do the masking, and the structure kept changing as I changed my mind about animations
