Anyone can start their own server on the Fediverse. It's much cheaper and easier than people realise.
You don't need to be a technical nerd, you don't need to install anything or update anything or own any equipment.
Non-technical people can use a "managed hosting" service which means you pay a small monthly fee (usually 5 to 10 euros a month) which includes the cost of the hosting and the hosting company does all the tech stuff for you. More info at:

@homegrown@social.growyourown.services Heya. I am looking at an alternative to gather.town and I found a few open source solutions like popspace or workadventure but they need to be self-hosted and I have no clue how and actually I prefer not as I might travel some months during the year... Do you have any recommendations?

@homegrown@social.growyourown.services Can confirm. I’ve been hosing my own instance for almost two years now. It’s super easy. And it only costs me $5 a month for the entire server, which I use for more than just the fediverse.
