The deal will be: if you want Gates money, you have to publish the resulting work as a preprint, end of. That is the version of record. (If you then want to also give it to a subscription journal, or pay an APC to put it in a Gold OA journal, feel free I guess.)

Some lead to APC payments, some to subscription payments and some fund infratsructure? That way, nothing every changes, I agree. But that's exactly why we welcome the Gates policy that is setting an example. if it were followed, journals would just die becuse nobody would be paying them any more.
