Mine has round coils and some sort of sensor to detect if a pot is on it; it refuses to cook if it doesn't detect the pot (my smallest pan is small enough to easily miss the sensor and accidentally turn it off). OP's model seems to be a bit more variable; I'm guessing the coils are placed so that wherever you put your pot or pan, it's gonna be on top of at least one coil?
