@foundseed@spore.social Afrofuturism is created by American descendants of Africans shipped to the Americas. It's a response to their need of identity and their own future, but it at best romanticizes what futures are dreamt of in actual Africa, where people don't get a voice to claim them. African Futurism are voices from a myriad cultures of modern Africa, rooted in their own contexts, histories, values and mythologies, distinct from each other and the American homogenization.

@foundseed@spore.social I have family in Kenya. Did you know that people in East Africa played "Spot Your Culture" when watching Black Panther's Wakanda, as the movie was a (warm, but still a) parody of cultures from all over the continent. It was done respectfully >as Americans define it<, not as people on the ground can see representation. Wakanda is an Atlantis that the Afrofuturism wants to be descended from, but it has little to do with Ghana or Kenya of today.

@alxd@writing.exchange oh africafuturism yes! (Autocorrect got you upthread) Yes, what I'm trying to reach for here is your polish "africafuturism", and what you are saying is you're having to simply make your own "afrofuturism". Is that what you're getting at?
