@packetcat@tenforward.social Cormac McCarthy springs to mind. I've seen explanation of why he never used quotation marks, and I don't buy that it's a good enough reason to impose that burden on his readers.
"You really have to be aware that there are no quotation marks, and write in such a way as to guide people as to who’s speaking.”
Sure -- great, go do that as an authorial discipline/improvement thing, then go back and put in quotes to not force the readers to share the hard-work part.
(James Ellroy comes to mind as another who does weird shit with his prose styling up with which I did not want to put.)
