We're running in circles: Back in the time sharing days, developers were by-and-large limited by the amount of computer time they or their employer could afford. Minicomputers and PC's fundamentally changed that, and for the last 20 years, most applications could comfortably be developed on cheap personal hardware. With AI, we're back to where we were 40 years ago.

@hanshuebner@mastodon.social and again for the same reasons: price and availability of hardware. but there's no reason to believe that we won't have a second personal computing revolution (unless the big players somehow manage to disable market forces... i'd say the demand clearly is there already, just waiting for supply on the hw and model side)

@hanshuebner@mastodon.social … and how well fitting is that due to the letters of intent of OpenAI and the hardware vendors for some reason sticking to it (*), local LLM/AI usage is now more expensive than ever due to rising RAM and storage prices. – So thanks to Altman’s subscription service, non-subscription local computing is getting more expensive.
