@hailey@hails.org @osnews@mstdn.social doesn't Android also do this on app startup?

@hailey@hails.org @osnews@mstdn.social Surprisingly, this is not the first time a Microsoft product has done this. https://community.spiceworks.com/t/microsoft-veterans-worst-bug-to-be-shipped-with-windows-was-from-the-most-unexpected-place/1239088 "Dave’s game engine for Space Cadet Pinball [a game shipped with Windows 95] would end up hogging an entire CPU core due to the lack of a frame rate limiter." The test engineers at my company used to run Space Cadet Pinball on our test workstations to max out the CPU while they tested out our software!

@hailey@hails.org @osnews@mstdn.social They might as well keep it at max permanently, not like the rest of the system runs any better

  • @hailey@hails.org I'm surprised that the CPU would not already clock up when opening an application in Windows. Surely that constant CPU demand would make it run at full speed. I guess not.

@hailey@hails.org @osnews@mstdn.social wait what he said macOS, Gnome, and KDE Plasma do the same thing and I am very suspicious of that claim but also not knowledgeable enough to know if it's bullshit or not 💀

@hailey@hails.org in the Wintel days, they’d have added a start menu coprocessor or dedicated instruction set extension
