A character is someone who's insecure about something. Everyone else is just a prop.
(Inspired by "Immersion & Emotion: The Twin Pillars of Storytelling," which I picked up a couple weeks ago. While it's fairly 100-level stuff, I think a return to fundamentals is what I need right now.)
