Buying an eBook in 2025:
1. "you need to register an account so you can access your ebook"
2. "for your account we need your real name and address"
3. "would you like to receive our spam?"
4. pay
5. "download this .acsm to download your ebook"
6. "you need to create an Adobe account for this .acsm"
7. "real name and date of birth required"
8. "would you like to receive our spam?"
9. "you now need our Adobe software which isn't available for your operating system"
10. install the software on a virtual machine
11. download the eBook
12. "surprise, that wasn't a .ebook but a .pdf with DRM"
13. install calibre and the DeDRM plugin
14. load the pdf and export it to ebook
15. cry because neither the pdf nor the ebook have the book's cover and are ugly

Plugin an e-reader to the computer and passing it to the virtual machines works, it is detected by the Adobe software, which can load the ebook (still a pdf full of drm in reality) into the e-reader. The result is nice and clean although I would have preferred to have a good quality backup. Seriously, what the hell is this purchase process? Why is it so complicated? Why do I have to give a lot of personal data to several companies? And why is this even legal?
