Friends, if you think you might need a lawyer for something, go to the trouble of getting a referral and having a conversation with one.
It won't cost you anything, and the lawyer will tell you whether you actually need one or not. They're usually overworked and will not try to sell you their services if you don't need them. I know that "trust a lawyer" sounds weird, but it's true.

Every state has a "bar association" which regulates its lawyers. These associations operate referral services. If you can't get a referral through your personal network or through Mastodon, these referral services are a good fallback. (Do a web search for "lawyer referral" + the name of your state.)
