History is much more sympathetic to those and tried but failed to do the right thing than to those who sat back and insisted such an effort was doomed to fail.
The John Browns of history are heroes are martyrs. The people who wagged their fingers and said they should have done things a better way are forgotten as anonymous, ineffectual cowards.
I'm not going anywhere with this other than to say that maybe if there's some crazy thing you want do to make the world better, but you're being held back by fear of how others will perceive you... That fear may be misplaced. It's failure to act that we condemn, not actions that fail.
