@idlestate@toot.cat yeah, thanks. in my mind, i was sort of thinking systems that have a command line that are not BASIC; that is a system layer that sits between the hardware/BIOS and the language. I am most familiar with the ZX Spectrum from that era, which didn't have such a layer, or layering, at all. The BBC Micro (i have one under my desk) very much did have that layer (for example, you could remove the BASIC language ROM).
