@athas@freeradical.zone I have to be careful about this with my students. Thinking in general terms can be useful because it can guide you in the right direction (e.g. identifying that something is a reductoin or a scan means one can leverage common paradigms for an efficient implementation), but one may end up missing task-specific aspects that can be beneficial.

@giuseppebilotta@fediscience.org Teaching situations (especially at university level) are all about identifying common patterns, and then this is no problem. I merely dislike the social dynamics that occur when only the person who has studied the most abstract mathematics knows what is *actually* going on, because my experience is that the observations are not very useful to solving the problem at hand.
