People often shout #selfhost. And yet only few people seem to realize that your self hosted service is worth dog shit when you don't have all of the following during a somewhat critical issue: - money - time - multiple backup stages - regular backup procedures - tested restore procedures on all stages - storage encryption - monitoring of services in use - secret management - ease of service integration - process documentation

Every single item in this list could build up to a single point of failure and it's probably worth a full blog post. I don't want to say don't selfhost, but running solely #forgejo doesn't cut it in the very long run. That's why people offer services on the Internet so you don't have to. And these services cost time and money. Just incorporate this thought into your shouting for selfhost.

@ppxl@social.tchncs.de I have recently jumped into #homelab and #selfhosting . It is a ton of work, especially if you are not versatile with Linux system administration. There is a lot of command line configuration to be done and it is easy to go down rabbit holes that can be very deep. Sure there are tutorials, but the amount of tacitly presumed knowledge is more than I expected.
