There’s not “too much choice” in Linux. There’s too much bad advice for potential new users from the existing user base. Every time someone new comes I see hordes of people shilling for their particular flavor of the month. It’s pretty simple: just tell new users to use Ubuntu (by far the most popular Linux distribution). They can figure it out themselves from there.
