On the bright side, when the options are "pay an evil corporation" or "pay a co-op," most of us will choose the latter whenever possible

It's not evil, so far as I can tell. It's not a co-op, though I could be paid more working at a huge tech company (also with much higher stress level). And we eschew AI, at least so far. So options may be few and far between, but they exist.
