...and as I just discovered, Meshcore uses a paid licence model; Meshtastic is free.

Thers's plenty of open source meshcore github.com/samuk/awesom... They do have an asshole problem with one of the devs, but they're splitting off from him. GitHub - samuk/awesome-meshcor...
