@JoTheBuzzyard@mastodon.art Most games don't bother with keeping handedness consistent if it's not a game mechanic. Usually, the main reason games do have separate sprites for all directions is to accommodate (important) asymmetric character designs.
Something else I've seen is (flipped) 8-directional movement but only (flipped) 4-directional (diagonal-only) attacks, since when the character isn't moving, it may not be noticeable if their facing direction doesn't quite match their sprite.

@eishiya@mastodon.art I know but I am still in the try-hard stages. I'm going to end up doing probably exactly that and thank you for the ideas, but I have this need to try the hard way before giving up lmao
