@michelestrider@mastodon.social As a cross-country Amtrak rider from way back, I tell you that the observation car is the place to be. You can do all those things there; strangers in the passenger cars are trying to read quietly or take a nap, but strangers in the observation car are sociable and ready to talk. And it's immediately above the lounge car (the same car, just different levels) on all of the long-distance trains that I've been on, so you can pop down there for both food and beverages anytime you need them (although if your roomette reservation includes meals, then you don't want to skip the dining car altogether). Since I haven't ridden in a few years, it's possible that they dismantled all of this for covid and never put it back. But the cars are all prefabricated, so as long as the observation cars still exist at all, I doubt that they've changed much.
