In ancient Rome, they had these public restrooms where people would do their business and then wipe their butts with a sponge on a stick that was kept in a bucket of vinegar or salt water. Maybe fancy Romans brought their own sponges? Anyway, that whole system wasn't great for public hygiene or health. Sometimes I wonder to what extent social media is the information hygiene equivalent to the ancient latrine, and what future generations will learn about the mental health contagion therein.
