@Methylzero@mast.hpc.social That's one of the things I've been wondering about—there's the hardware (range, sensitivity, etc.) and then there's the quality of the onboard software. I can easily imagine them skimping on the latter, especially if part of their customer base is going to do all the "real" analysis offline anyhow.
(On the other hand, I've also been wondering how tightfisted analyzers might be with their data.)

@timmc@better.boston I would not consider using an XRF gun on any sample that is not a literal chunk of metal with a shiny clean surface, unless it was letting me see the raw spectrum. Even then...XRF does not have particularly great penetration depth, you are mostly testing whatever is on the line-of-sight surface. So if your sample is not homogenous it is less reliable. 1/2
