@Profpatsch@mastodon.xyz @strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz I do not think the Mastodon APIs are really in scope for this discussion at all, unless the intention is to rely on ActivityPub C2S directly. What we are discussing here is federation itself, meaning the S2S side of the protocol and the interoperability guarantees between independently implemented servers. The client API layer is almost a separate concern entirely, e.g misskey has neither C2S neither Mastodon API,  because even very different client-facing APIs can still interoperate correctly if the federation contract underneath is sufficiently precise and unambiguous.
