I also mention designing this in Inkscape over here: https://fosstodon.org/@chris_hayes/113590768595417891 I'll say for picking an interesting and consistent visual style, designing everything ahead of time in Inkscape was crucial. Trial-erroring designs in code is just too time consuming, and having a design I liked pushed me to achieve visual effects that are not easy to make in code.
