It’s shocking how many small businesses are still using Facebook. And Facebook is becoming increasingly hard to access for non-members. I’m wondering what an open alternative would look like—maybe: • Support for a few simple web pages. Maybe not even fancy layouts but only Markdown-based text (with links, images, tables, etc.). • News updates could be provided via ActivityPub. IIRC, Mastodon has plans to let you subscribe to those via email. Anything else?

It’s possible that Mastodon eventually gets simple account portability via domain names. Then you could even reach an account via a URL with the user’s domain.

@rauschma@fosstodon.org ownership, and who pays for hosting. Facebook made it easy to ignore that question.

@rauschma@fosstodon.org My favourite club uses Instagram to post events. Totally annoying, I never know what they're up to (doesn't matter much in the end, but still). They do have a web site with events announced and ticket sales, yet the tickets can also be bought from a different platform via insta. Like two completely different clubs posting stuff. I don't get it.
