The new @arXiv policy is to impose an English version for all papers.
They acknowledge: “We realize that many arXiv submitters may not have access to professional translation services; non-English paper versions that use automated translation are acceptable, as long as their content is faithful to the original paper.”
Four possibilities emerge:
1 - people outside of the English speaking countries start reclaiming their mother tongue for science.
2 - contrary to their expectation, most submissions will be English only.
3 - a torrent of AI-generated translations will flood on the arxiv and later on in papers.
4 - French people put their papers in French on @hal_fr, which will make French science less visible.
What would you wish? What do you expect?
